Opposition Malawi Congress Party have now engaged an extra gear to tarnish the image of former State President Dr Joyce Banda by fabricating lies about her perks from government.
Masterminding this misinformation drive is Chikumbutso Mtumodzi who once served as Press Secretary for late Bingu wa Mutharika, he is being assisted by another MCP sympathizer Billy Mayaya who on some days parades as a human rights activist.
All what the two are claiming through their online publication, National Agenda, is false and simply bent on injuring innocent citizens to achieve political vengeance.
Truth is, Dr Joyce Banda did not receive K280 million from government, let alone any amount meant to thank her for the support some Peoples Party MPs rendered to DPP-led government during Electoral Reforms Bills in the just ended Parliament.
JB served Malawi as President and Head of State as such she deserves both respect and of course her due remuneration package in accordance with the laid-out statutes.
Her salary as President was then pegged at K1.3 million and in her 37 months of service she never even accumulated an amount close to the K280 million. Even when her gratuity is calculated Dr Joyce Banda won’t receive such an amount from government.
This publication understands that government already paid the former President her package many months ago even before the Electoral Reforms Bills were brought to Parliament.
As such whatever has happened after 9 PP MPs supported government in Parliament does not in any way influence any payment from government to Dr Joyce Banda.
So, it is careless to use JB’s benefits as a tool for political fights. MCP must channel their energies towards necessary fights after what happened in Parliament. Even some of their own MPs were absent during deliberations and voting on the bills.
With or without Parliamentary politicking Dr Joyce Banda will continue to receive what she deserves as former Head of State. If MCP has a problem with it then they need to learn how government as a system works.
As for Dr Joyce Banda, history will always locate her as the 4th President of the Republic of Malawi and it’s first female leader.
