The death toll from the road accident involving MalawiDefense Force (MDF) soldiershas risen to 18 following the
death of two more in hospital.
According to hospital sources these were recruitsand their trainers returning
from a training exercise. Sixteen were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzimba
The Malawi Army soldiers were headed for the Malawi Armed Forces College
(Mafco) in Salima. The driver of the vehicle, Tata truck, is said to have failed to control it at a place
called Makanjira on the M1 Road and it plunged near South Rukuru River.
According to Mzimba District Health Office spokesperson Ellings Nyirenda there are fears that the death toll could rise. He said several other soldiers are in critical condition and all of the hospital’s emergency units have been overwhelmed.
“We have closed all the emergency units to attend to this emergency” he said.
MDP spokesperson Major Paul Chiphwanya has confirmed saying his office is trying to get more details to alert
relations of the recruits.
Meanwhile, 15 other casualties have been referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital and its fearrd death toll could rise again.
